When someone dies, you might have lots of feelings. You may feel sad or unhappy not just because you miss the person but maybe because lots of things in your life have changed since the person died. It’s okay if you want to cry. Crying can make you feel better. It’s important not to hide how you are feeling.
You might feel angry at what has happened or because the person has left you behind. You may be feeling annoyed or in a bad mood more often than normal. You might be worried or confused. You might want to spend some time alone or with others. You may feel lonely when you think about the things you did with the person or miss the things you talked about together. All these feelings are completely normal and understandable.
Some feelings might last for a short time, or some might last for a very long time. Other people may have different feelings about you. Everyone reacts differently. There is no right or wrong way to feel or react when someone dies.
When experiencing grief your body might feel different than normal. You might sleep more than you usually do or may find it harder to go to sleep. You may find it difficult to wake up in the morning or you have lots of energy and find it hard to sit still. You should try going to bed at the same time each night and try keeping your normal sleeping routine. If you have long term problems with your sleep, you should see your doctor (GP) as they may be able to help you.
You might eat less or more than usual. However, try eating as healthily as you can, and eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and foods with protein in them. This will give you more energy and may help you to feel better.
Support during grief can be very helpful, you may find support from friends and family. You can also speak to your doctor (GP) or your nurse. Your GP will also help you find a counsellor, who is specially trained to help you talk about your feelings. There are lots of charities and organisations that can offer support and advice, you can find many of these organisations listed on The Farewell Guide website.
